It is THE title that popularized the Game Royale mode for the general public: PUBG has already entered the legend of video games. Focus on a title that revolutionized the FPS in multi online.
What is PUBG?
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (more commonly known as PUBG due to the complexity of the name) is a multiplayer video game that appeared in early access on Steam in March 2017. A title developed by PUBG Corporation, a subsidiary of the publisher Bluehole, it is based on the screenplay of the Japanese film Battle Royale (2001), which has since given its name to the concept of online party. The principle: players are parachuted without equipment over a gigantic deserted map (the player chooses when to jump off the plane). Once on the ground, they must try to recover the best possible equipment (weapons, armor, vehicles, medicines ...), while fighting the multiple sources of danger threatening their survival. One goal: to be the last one alive!
The origins of the development of PUBG
The origin of the development of PUBG is quite atypical, since its director Brendan Greene (whose nickname PlayerUnknown was used to christen the game!) was originally only a simple moddeur, that is, a developer capable of creating extensions, allowing to modify an existing game. But the creation of DayZ: Battle Royale popularized his work. He was then contacted by his future producer, the Korean Chang Han Kim, a member of a studio affiliate of Bluehole to develop a new genre of Battle Royale. Greene agreed and moved to South Korea in 2015 to get the job done.
How do I play PUBG?
After just over a year of development, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has been available for paid download on the Steam platform since March 2017. The switch from the early access game to the official version in December 2017 will not have changed anything at its price: 29.90 euros. The popularity of PUBG has allowed it, over the same period, to be available on several media. Xbox One owners can play PUBG on consoles since (always for €29.90 in classic edition). More surprising: a mobile version (available for free on Android and iOS) was launched at the end of winter 2018, with more mixed success, the support not lends itself to this gaming experience. Finally, in December 2018, PUBG will arrive on PS4.
The unfolding of a game (Gameplay) of PUBG
We've been talking about Battle Royale mode since the beginning of this dossier: while it's not something new in itself brought by PUBG, Brendan Greene's game is largely at the root of its democratization. The recipe is explosive: in PUBG, 100 players are parachuted into a realistic map, with the sole objective of survival. In the first few minutes, the goal is mainly to pick up a weapon first, equip yourself, and withstand the first duels with the players parachuted near you. A deadly gas cloud gradually narrows the map, forcing players to meet in an increasingly small area. The last survivors are often the toughest, and usually hide to surprise you!
Why is PUBG a hit?
Helped indirectly by the popularity of the Hunger Games saga (where hunger games look like PUBG), PUBG has the merit of being released at the right time. The popularity of Brendan Greene's work on ARMA II also helped the game take off quickly. Short and lively, the games can follow quickly: you lost? It doesn't matter, go back to the Top 1 hunt immediately! A concept that appeals to some more casual players, while purists will appreciate the realistic side of the gameplay (equipment management, weight, reloading, difficult aiming ...)
What's the difference between PUBG and Fortnite?
A few months after its early release, PUBG saw its throne waver (see fall in the eyes of some) in the face of the release of a new Battle Royale: Fortnite. Today, the title of Epic Games has supplanted in number of PUBG players. This is mainly due to the style of play, which is more fun, easy to take in hand, where PUBG relies on pure realism. The creative aspect of Fortnite, including the possibility of building buildings to protect itself, symbolizes this difference in mentality. But Fortnite's success also owes much to its free Battle Royale mode, which has made it easy for a young audience to access it.
Some tips to survive PUBG
Want to rub shoulders with PUBG, but are afraid to string together defeats? A few simple tips will help you avoid unpleasant surprises. For example, avoid the big cities when you skydive: the loot is interesting, but many players fight for them, with a high probability of death. Choose a parachute near a quieter area, preferably with buildings. Find a vehicle quickly, and take care of it so you never find yourself at the mercy of the gas cloud. Watch your ammo: If you can't shoot anymore, travel discreetly until you find them. Always keep an eye on your back, and watch out for single-access islands: they are often the scene of ambushes!
